How to Measure Google AI Overview Performance and Citations
Measuring Google AI Overview performance takes three free sources: the Generative AI report in Search Console, GA4, and a manual citation check. Here are the six steps and the metrics to track.

You can measure Google AI Overview visibility for free. Use three sources together. First, check the Generative AI report in Search Console for impressions by page. Second, use the Performance report and GA4 for clicks and conversions. Third, search your target queries by hand to see which sources Google cites.
However, no single Google tool shows impressions, clicks and citations together. Therefore, this guide links them in one workflow.
This matters because AI answers now appear at the top of many results pages. In Intura's July 2026 study of 1,000 Bahasa Indonesia keywords, an AI Overview appeared on 93.0% of them. On average, each one cited 7.7 sources. As a result, a page-one ranking often places you below the answer box.
This guide covers four things. You will learn what a citation is and what each Google tool shows. Then you will follow a six-step workflow and see where Google data stops. The data comes from Google's own documentation and Intura's July 2026 capture of the live results page.
What Is an AI Overview Citation, and What Does Google Cite?
An AI Overview citation is a link to your page that appears next to Google's AI answer. Google treats it as a supporting source.
Google's AI features guidance sets one rule. Google must index your page and be able to show it with a snippet. In addition, Google asks for no special schema markup or AI text files.
Google also says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use query fan-out. This means Google runs several related searches across subtopics. As a result, the links it shows can come from a wider set of pages. Therefore, your page can earn a citation without ranking first for the exact query. However, Google only shows an AI Overview when it judges one useful, so many queries never trigger one.
What Google Cites Most in Indonesia
Intura captured the live Google results page for 1,000 Bahasa Indonesia keywords on 23 and 24 July 2026. Overall, it recorded 7,140 citations from 1,578 domains. Read the full study for the method.
| Source type | Share of citations | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Social and video platforms | 29.2% | YouTube 19.3%, Instagram 5.6% |
| Health portals and hospitals | 17.6% | Halodoc, Alodokter, Hello Sehat |
| E-commerce and retail | 8.3% | Tokopedia, Blibli, Shopee |
| News and media | 7.0% | Detik, CNN Indonesia |
| Government (.go.id) | 2.9% | Ministries, regulators |
| Long tail (about 1,100 domains) | 26.3% | Brand sites, telcos, blogs |
- First, YouTube topped all four categories, and 58.0% of answers cited at least one video.
- Second, in Health, Halodoc or Alodokter appeared in 94.6% of answers.
- Also, 68.0% of cited domains appeared only once, so one specific page can still get in.
- Finally, 70 of 1,000 keywords showed no AI Overview. Most of them asked for real-time or local information, such as "kurs rupiah hari ini" and "apotek 24 jam".
Treat these numbers as a July 2026 capture. Intura used Google's English/US interface setting with Indonesian keywords. In addition, the study covers four categories and took one capture per keyword.
Which Google Tools Measure AI Overviews?
Google Search Central announced dedicated Generative AI performance reports in Search Console on 3 June 2026. They count how often your URLs appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode. The same data also stays in your overall Performance report. Google then opened the reports worldwide on 31 August 2026.
| Tool | What it shows | What it does not show | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Search Console: Generative AI report | Impressions in AI features, by page and date | Clicks, CTR and queries | Finding which pages Google surfaces in AI answers |
| Search Console: Performance report (Web) | Clicks, impressions, queries and pages, including AI feature traffic | An AI-only filter for clicks | Pulling clicks for the same pages and dates |
| Google Analytics 4 | Sessions, engagement and conversions by landing page | Which clicks came from an AI Overview | Seeing what visitors do after the click |
| Google Search, checked by hand | Whether an AI Overview appears, its text and its sources | History and scale; results vary by place and time | Measuring citation rate and source mix |
| Keyword Planner and Google Trends | Demand and trends for your topics | Whether an AI Overview appears or cites you | Choosing which queries to test |
Three Limits to Know Before You Report
- No clicks in the new report: Google's announcement lists impressions, pages and dates for the new report. Independent analyses add that it has no clicks, CTR or query data.
- No double counting: AI impressions already sit inside your Web impressions. Therefore, adding the two totals counts the same views twice (LLM Pulse).
- No AI split in GA4: GA4 records AI Overview clicks as google / organic. As a result, you cannot separate them from classic results in GA4 alone (MeasureU).
Step-by-Step: How to Measure AI Overview Performance
Follow these six steps in order. You need Search Console, GA4 and a browser.
Collect Your Google Data
- First, pick 20 to 50 queries to track. Start with Keyword Planner and your Search Console queries for the topics you want to own. Then add long, question-style queries. For example, filter Search Console with the regex
([^\s]+\s+){7}[^\s]+to find queries of eight words or more. We explain why this range gives a stable read in How Many Prompts Do You Need to Track AI Brand Mentions? - Second, open the Generative AI report. In Search Console, go to Performance and choose the Generative AI view. Then export impressions by page for the last three months. If you cannot see the view, it may not have reached your property yet. One analysis also reports that sites with very few AI impressions may not see it.
- Third, join AI impressions to clicks. In the Performance report, set the search type to Web and filter to the same pages and dates. Next, export clicks and join both exports by URL. Then list two groups of pages. The first group ranks well but has no AI impressions. The second group has high AI impressions but falling clicks.
Check the Results and Report
- Fourth, check what visitors do after the click. In GA4, open the landing page report and filter to Organic Search. Then compare engaged sessions and conversions for pages that gain AI impressions against pages that do not. However, this shows a link between the two, not proof of cause.
- Fifth, audit citations by hand. For each tracked query, search in a clean browser window set to your target country and language. Next, note whether an AI Overview appears. Then expand it and record each cited domain and URL. Finally, check whether it names your brand.
- Sixth, report and repeat every month. AI Overview presence changes between searches, so trust overall rates more than single results. In addition, note the dates when you publish or update pages.
Metrics to Track
| Metric | How to calculate | Source |
|---|---|---|
| AI Overview presence rate | Queries showing an AI Overview ÷ queries tested | Manual audit |
| Citation rate | Queries that cite your URL ÷ queries showing an AI Overview | Manual audit |
| AI impressions | Impressions per page in the Generative AI report | Search Console |
| AI impressions per click | AI impressions ÷ Web clicks, same page and period | Search Console |
| Cited-source mix | Share of cited domains by type: video, portal, marketplace, news | Manual audit |
| Engaged sessions and conversions | Per landing page, Organic Search only | GA4 |
How to Earn More AI Overview Citations
Google says you need no extra requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Therefore, standard SEO remains your base. The tactics below combine that guidance with patterns from Intura's data. They are practical suggestions, not Google rules.
- Meet the basics. Keep your pages crawlable and indexable, and avoid
nosnippetor tightmax-snippetlimits. - Answer first. Put a direct answer of about 40 to 60 words under each question heading. Then add detail.
- Publish specific content. Original data and narrow topics give you a way in. For example, 68.0% of cited domains in the Indonesia study appeared only once.
- Add video. Publish a chaptered YouTube video for common questions. In the Indonesia data, 58.0% of AI Overviews cited a YouTube video, and 46.8% linked to a timestamp. For the breakdown by category, read Does Social Media Affect AI Search Visibility?
- Check the dominant sources in your category. In Health, Halodoc and Alodokter appeared in 94.6% of answers. Therefore, check whether you can appear on those portals too. Our backlink method for AI search shows how to pick those pages.
- Match your markup to your page. Your structured data should mirror the visible text. Google asks for no special schema for AI features.
- Skip real-time and local queries. Keywords with "hari ini" got an AI Overview 72.2% of the time, against a 93.0% baseline. As a result, classic results still matter more there.
What This Guide Does Not Cover
- Other markets: The Indonesia figures come from one July 2026 capture across four categories. Results differ by market and category.
- Cause and effect: The GA4 comparison in step four shows a link, not proof that AI impressions drive conversions.
- Every property: The Generative AI report may not have reached your property yet. In that case, rely on steps three to five.
What Can Google Tools Not Show You?
Google tools cover Google only. However, your buyers also ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and DeepSeek. Intura's AI Visibility Audit runs buyer questions on those engines. It reports mention rate, citation rate, accuracy and cited sources. As a result, you can compare Google with the other engines in one view. On a tight budget, start with our low-budget AI visibility playbook.
To be clear, Intura sells tools in this category. However, the six steps above work the same with Search Console, GA4 and a browser alone.

Frequently asked questions
How do I measure Google AI Overview performance?
Combine three free sources. The Generative AI report in Search Console shows impressions by page, the Performance report and GA4 show clicks and conversions, and a manual search shows which sources Google cites. Track 20 to 50 queries and repeat the check once a month.
Does Search Console show clicks from AI Overviews?
Not separately. Search Console counts clicks from AI features in the Performance report under the Web search type. However, you cannot filter to AI-only clicks. The Generative AI report adds impressions by page, not clicks.
Can GA4 track AI Overview traffic?
Not directly. GA4 records these clicks as google / organic. Instead, compare pages that gain AI impressions in Search Console with their engagement and conversions in GA4.
How do I know if my page appears in an AI Overview?
Check the Generative AI report for pages with impressions. Then search your target queries and expand the AI Overview to read its sources. The report shows that your URL appeared, but only the manual check shows the query and the source.
What does Google's AI Overview cite most often?
In Intura's July 2026 study of 1,000 Indonesian keywords, YouTube took 19.3% of 7,140 citations. Social and video platforms together took 29.2%, and news outlets took 7.0%. However, results differ by market and category.
Do I need special schema or an AI text file to get cited?
No. Google says AI features need no new machine-readable files, AI text files or special schema. However, Google must index your page and be able to show it with a snippet.
How often should I measure AI Overview performance?
Once a month works for most sites. AI Overview presence changes between searches, so track rates across 20 to 50 queries. Do not judge a single result.
