Does Social Media Affect AI Search Visibility? Data by Category (2026)

Yes, social media affects AI search visibility — just not evenly, and not the way most brand teams assume. In our July 2026 capture of 1,000 Indonesian Google searches, YouTube alone took 19.3% of every citation inside Google AI Overview, almost three times the 7.0% that went to all news and media outlets combined. TikTok, the platform many Indonesian marketers put the most budget into, did not make the top six cited domains in any category we measured.

So the question teams keep asking — "if we post more on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, will we show up in ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google AI Overview?" — has no single answer. It depends on the platform, on the AI engine, and most of all on the category you sell in. A skincare brand and a laptop brand face close to opposite rules.

Everything below comes from two primary datasets Intura collected in July 2026: 1,000 Bahasa Indonesia keywords captured from the live Google SERP on 23–24 July (930 returned an AI Overview, carrying 7,140 citations), and 1,250 consumer prompts run through Gemini with Google Search grounding on 22–23 July (3,089 citations). Both full reports, with methodology, are public: the Google AI Overview study and the Gemini study.

Does social media affect AI search visibility?

Social media affects AI search visibility through two separate routes, and each platform mostly travels one of them. The first route is citation: the engine searches the web, reads a page, and links it as a source. The second is mention: the model names a brand or platform in the answer text, often with no link at all, sometimes without searching anything.

  • YouTube travels the citation route. It was the most-cited domain in all four Google AI Overview categories we tested, and 58.0% of the 930 AI Overviews cited at least one YouTube video.
  • Instagram travels the citation route in some categories. It was the #3 cited domain overall in Google AI Overview (5.6% of citations) and reached 9.1% of citations in the News category.
  • TikTok mostly travels the mention route. It did not appear among the six most-cited domains of any category in either study — yet in Gemini's Food answers it was the most-named entity, tied with Instagram, each appearing in 6.8% of answers.
  • Lemon8 is a quiet citation source in lifestyle categories. In Gemini it held 3.8% of Fashion citations and 4.1% of Food citations.

Why the split? Our read — this is interpretation, not something we tested — is that a YouTube page ships a title, a description, a transcript, and chapter markers: readable text an engine can retrieve and quote down to the second. A lot of TikTok and Instagram content sits inside app views and login prompts, so it is easier for a model to know about those platforms than to cite one specific post.

Does it matter which AI engine you look at?

It matters a lot: social platforms carry far more weight in Google AI Overview than in Gemini's grounded answers. In the AI Overview capture, social and video platforms took 29.2% of all 7,140 citations. In the Gemini run, the entire UGC and social group — YouTube, Lemon8, forums, blogs, and Q&A sites together — took 8.1% of 3,089 citations.

Signal Google AI Overview (1,000 keywords) Gemini + Search grounding (1,250 prompts)
Answers with any citation 930 of 1,000 (93.0%) 427 of 1,250 (34.2%)
Social share of citations 29.2% (social & video platforms) 8.1% (UGC & social, incl. forums and blogs)
YouTube in Electronics 20.9% of citations, #1 domain 7.0% of citations, #1 domain
TikTok in any category's top six No No

Two caveats keep that comparison honest. The studies covered different categories (AI Overview: Computers & Electronics, Health, Entertainment, News; Gemini: Electronics, Fashion, Beauty, Travel, Food), and the groupings don't match one-to-one. Electronics is the only overlap, and it points the same direction in both: YouTube first.

Gemini also adds a gate that AI Overview barely has. Only 34.2% of the 1,250 Gemini prompts triggered a web search at all; the rest were answered from the model's memory with zero citations. In those answers no social post and no website gets linked. The only visibility left is being named — which is exactly where TikTok and Instagram show up.

Which categories does social media help most?

Social media helps most in Electronics, News, Entertainment, and Food; it helps less in Fashion; and it sits behind specialist sites in Health, Beauty, and Travel. Every figure in this table comes from the two studies above.

Category What the data shows Social effort first
Computers & Electronics YouTube 20.9% of AI Overview citations and cited in 70.7% of AI Overviews; #1 in Gemini at 7.0%; Reddit 2.2% in AI Overview YouTube reviews and comparisons
News YouTube 22.0% and Instagram 9.1% of AI Overview citations; social platforms take 33.5% vs news outlets 19.8% inside the category YouTube explainers, Instagram posts with full-text captions
Entertainment YouTube 15.4%, Instagram 7.3%, Reddit 2.7% of AI Overview citations YouTube, Instagram
Food YouTube #1 in Gemini (5.9%), Lemon8 4.1%; TikTok and Instagram each named in 6.8% of answers; 18.3% of Gemini's Food search queries used viral/trending words YouTube recipes, Lemon8, TikTok for being named
Fashion Lemon8 3.8%, YouTube 2.7% of Gemini citations; TikTok named in 5.2% of answers Lemon8, TikTok for being named
Health YouTube #1 at 18.8%, but Halodoc and Alodokter together take 34.1% and appear in 94.6% of Health AI Overviews Health portals first, YouTube second
Beauty No social platform in Gemini's six most-cited Beauty domains; Halodoc, Female Daily, and Alodokter lead Portals and beauty communities first
Travel YouTube only #4 in Gemini (3.6%), behind Traveloka, Kompas, and Detik; brands named at the same rate with or without search OTAs and official sources; social is a long-term play

Health and Beauty: social comes second

Health is where a social-first plan misreads the data. YouTube technically ranks first (18.8% of citations against Halodoc's 18.7%), but Halodoc or Alodokter appears in 94.6% of Health AI Overviews. In one record, the keyword "manfaat kunyit putih", seven of the nine sources were health portals, hospitals, or a government puskesmas page. Gemini's Beauty answers follow the same instinct: its six most-cited domains are Halodoc, Female Daily, Alodokter, Suara, Watsons, and Hello Sehat. No social platform makes that list.

For these brands the first job is getting onto the portals and communities the engines already trust — which is a link-and-placement problem more than a posting problem. We walk through how to score those target sites in our guide to finding backlinks that AI search actually cites.

Food and Fashion: TikTok works through mentions

Food and Fashion are where TikTok earns its place — as a name, not a link. In Gemini's Food answers the two most-named entities were not food brands at all, but TikTok and Instagram. One Fashion prompt asked for handmade accessory brands "yang lagi hits di media sosial"; Gemini rewrote it into the search query "brand aksesoris lokal handmade indonesia hits instagram tiktok", then recommended Segi Jewelry together with its social handle, @segijewelry. The citations for that same answer went to Female Daily, Lemon8, and two small brand-owned websites — not to Instagram or TikTok.

That one record shows the pattern: social buzz shaped which brands got named, while written pages collected the citations.

Travel: the list is already in the model's memory

Travel is where social posting does the least for AI citations in our data. YouTube was only the fourth most-cited domain in Gemini's Travel answers, and Gemini named the same platforms — Traveloka, Tiket.com, Agoda — whether it searched or not (1.49 vs 1.78 brands per answer, a difference that was not statistically significant). We'd argue social presence still feeds that memory over years of model updates, but a July snapshot can't measure it.

The category rule of thumb

  • Electronics, News, Entertainment — YouTube is a primary citation channel. Treat every video as an answer page.
  • Food, Fashion — split the effort: TikTok and Instagram to get named, YouTube and Lemon8 to get cited.
  • Health, Beauty — earn presence on portals and communities first; social supports that, it doesn't replace it.
  • Travel — OTAs, news, and official sources carry the citations; social is a slow brand-memory investment.

How do you optimize YouTube for AI search visibility?

Build each YouTube video like an answer page: a title in the words people search with, chapters that each answer one sub-question, and the answer written out in the description. The reason is in the data — 46.8% of the AI Overview answer texts we captured carried a video timestamp, meaning Google pointed to the exact second that answered the query, not just the video.

  1. Title the video in the engine's search grammar. When Gemini searched for Electronics answers, its queries stacked a price bracket, a year, and "terbaik" — for example "rekomendasi HP gaming 3 jutaan terbaik 2025 2026". A video titled that way lines up with the retrieval string; "Unboxing Seri X" doesn't.
  2. Add chapters, and name each one as a question. A chapter called "Berapa lama baterainya tahan?" gives the engine a timestamp worth pointing to. "Part 3" gives it nothing.
  3. Say the answer in the first sentence after each chapter mark. The transcript is text, and the opening line of a chapter is the passage a timestamp link lands on. This is our inference from how the timestamps behave, not a controlled test.
  4. Write the key facts into the description. Specs, prices, the verdict, and your brand name spelled the same way every time.
  5. Refresh year-stamped titles. Gemini's queries often carried two years at once ("2025 2026"), so a review still titled 2024 risks falling outside the match.

A note from building these datasets, because it will save you a bad audit. Google AI Overview panels often list the same page twice — once as an inline link chip and once as a source card. 192 of the 930 answers had duplicates, and counting raw links gave 7,880 citations instead of the real 7,140. If you check your own YouTube citations by scrolling through AI Overviews, you'll overcount the same way. Count unique URLs per answer.

The Gemini data has the opposite blind spot. Its citations came back as domain names with unresolved redirect links, so we know youtube.com was cited 46 times in Electronics, but not which channels or videos. That is why this post gives platform-level advice rather than a list of "channels Gemini loves" — we don't have that data, and we won't pretend to.

How do you optimize Instagram, TikTok, and Lemon8 for AI visibility?

Each platform has a different job: get Instagram posts cited in News and Entertainment, use TikTok to get your brand named, and use Lemon8 for written reviews in Food and Fashion.

Instagram

  • Put the full answer in the caption, not only in the image. An engine can quote a caption; text baked into a carousel slide is much harder to extract. (Our judgment — we didn't compare caption types.)
  • Prioritize Instagram if you publish news, events, or entertainment. It held 9.1% of AI Overview citations in News and 7.3% in Entertainment, against 3.6% in Computers & Electronics.
  • Keep the brand name identical across your handle, bio, and website. A model that sees "@segijewelry" in one place and "Segi Jewelry" in another has to connect the two before it can name you.

TikTok

  • Treat TikTok as a naming channel, not a citation channel. It missed the top six cited domains in every category of both studies, so measure it by whether AI answers mention your brand, not by links.
  • Make the brand name audible and readable. Say it on camera, put it in the caption, and ask creators to spell it the same way.
  • Ride the words that trigger search in your category. In Food, 18.3% of Gemini's search queries carried "viral", "trending", or "kekinian". For a prompt asking how to make udang balon "kayak yang viral itu", Gemini searched "resep udang balon viral" and cited YouTube, IDN Times, Liputan6, and HaiBunda — the viral moment got cited through the pages that wrote it up.
  • Republish your best explainer videos on YouTube. The same 60 seconds that earns attention on TikTok can become a citable YouTube video or chapter. (Judgment: our data didn't separate Shorts from long-form videos.)

Lemon8 and Reddit

  • Lemon8 — worth written "rekomendasi" posts in Fashion (3.8% of Gemini citations) and Food (4.1%). It didn't make the top six in Electronics, Beauty, or Travel.
  • Reddit — appeared in Google AI Overview for Computers & Electronics (2.2%) and Entertainment (2.7%), but in none of Gemini's top-six lists. Relevant mainly if your buyers research in English-language communities.

Three mistakes the data warns against

  • Cutting the website to fund social — 26.3% of AI Overview citations went to roughly 1,100 long-tail domains, and 68.0% of all cited domains got in with a single page. Specific written pages still win.
  • Judging TikTok by AI citations or referral clicks — its measurable AI footprint in our data is being named, so that is the metric to track.
  • Expecting social alone to move Health or Beauty — two portals appear in 94.6% of Health AI Overviews; social can't route around them.

How can you tell whether social media is improving your AI visibility?

Track two numbers separately, per category: how often AI answers cite your social URLs, and how often they name your brand at all. Blending them hides which route is working.

  1. Fix a set of real buyer questions for your category and run the same set every month on ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, and Google AI Overview. We cover how large that set needs to be in how many prompts to track for AI brand mentions.
  2. Log citations as unique URLs per answer, tagging youtube.com, instagram.com, tiktok.com, and lemon8-app.com separately from your own domain.
  3. Log brand mentions in the answer text, including answers with zero citations — in Gemini those were 65.8% of prompts.
  4. Read the two numbers against each other. Citations of your videos rising means your social content is being retrieved. Mentions rising in answers that cite nothing means you're entering the model's memory, which moves slowly.

What this research doesn't tell you

  • Causation — we measured which domains get cited and which brands get named, not whether posting more causes more of either. Neither study ran a before-and-after test on a brand's own accounts.
  • ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity — both datasets cover Google AI Overview and Gemini only. We don't have comparable data on how the other engines treat social platforms.
  • TikTok's exact share — the reports group TikTok inside social platforms. We can say it missed every top-six list, not its precise percentage.
  • Time and setup — both are July 2026 snapshots of Bahasa Indonesia queries, and the AI Overview capture ran with an English/US interface locale. Citation patterns shift; re-check before a big budget decision.

So should you invest in social media for AI search?

Yes — if you invest in the channel your category's AI answers actually use. For Electronics, News, and Entertainment, a well-chaptered YouTube library is one of the most citable assets an Indonesian brand can build right now. For Food and Fashion, TikTok and Instagram shape which brands get named, while YouTube and Lemon8 collect the links. For Health, Beauty, and Travel, social supports a plan that has to start with portals, OTAs, and official sources.

Worth stating plainly: Intura sells AI search optimization services, so weigh these recommendations with that in mind. Everything above can be run by hand with a spreadsheet and a fixed list of prompts.

If you'd rather not run it by hand, Intura's AI search tracking shows which platforms and sources AI answers cite in your category, and our search optimization service (SEO, GEO, AEO) turns those findings into a channel plan.

Frequently asked questions

Does social media affect AI search visibility?

Yes, but unevenly across platforms and categories. In Intura's July 2026 capture of 1,000 Indonesian Google searches, social and video platforms took 29.2% of Google AI Overview citations, with YouTube alone at 19.3%. In a parallel run of 1,250 Gemini prompts, the whole UGC and social group took only 8.1%. Which platform helps depends on the engine and on what you sell.

Does TikTok content get cited by AI search engines?

Rarely as a link, based on our data. TikTok was not among the six most-cited domains in any category in either Intura's Google AI Overview study or its Gemini study. It mattered as a name instead: TikTok was mentioned in 6.8% of Gemini's Food answers. ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity were not part of these datasets.

Why does Google AI Overview cite YouTube so often?

YouTube was the top cited domain in all four categories Intura tested, and 58.0% of 930 AI Overviews cited at least one video. Nearly half of the answer texts (46.8%) linked to a specific timestamp. Our interpretation is that titles, descriptions, transcripts, and chapters give Google readable, time-coded passages to quote — a likely reason, not a tested one.

Is Instagram worth optimizing for AI search?

It depends on your category. Instagram took 9.1% of Google AI Overview citations in News and 7.3% in Entertainment, but only 3.6% in Computers & Electronics. If you publish news, events, or entertainment content, write the complete answer in the caption so it can be quoted, rather than only inside the image.

Which industries benefit most from social media for AI visibility?

Electronics, News, and Entertainment benefit most, mainly through YouTube citations — YouTube appeared in 70.7% of Electronics AI Overviews. Food and Fashion benefit through brand mentions and Lemon8 reviews. Health, Beauty, and Travel benefit least, because portals, OTAs, and official sources hold most citations there.

Should a health or beauty brand focus on social media or health portals for AI search?

Portals first. Halodoc or Alodokter appeared in 94.6% of Google AI Overviews for health keywords in Intura's study, and Gemini's six most-cited Beauty domains included no social platform. YouTube is a sensible second channel, since it still held 18.8% of Health citations.

How do I optimize YouTube videos to be cited in AI Overview?

Title videos the way the engine searches, such as price bracket plus year for gadgets ("HP gaming 3 jutaan terbaik 2025 2026"). Break the video into chapters named as questions, answer each one in its opening sentence, and repeat the key facts in the description. Refresh year-stamped titles so they keep matching current queries.
