How to Get Your Brand Mentioned in ChatGPT (and What to Fix First)

To get your brand mentioned in ChatGPT, make sure the web already talks about you in the places ChatGPT reads: consistent facts about your company, pages that answer specific buyer questions, and mentions on third-party sites such as retailers, directories, reviews, video and community threads. Then measure how often you're named across repeated runs instead of checking once.

Most advice on this topic stops at "build authority". This guide answers the brand owner's question instead: why ChatGPT doesn't mention you today, how to check that properly, which kinds of prompts you can realistically win, and what to fix first.

If your goal is to get an article cited as a source rather than your brand named, read our companion guide on how to get articles cited by ChatGPT (Indonesian). This page is also available in Indonesian: Cara agar brand kamu muncul di ChatGPT.

TL;DR

  • ChatGPT names brands the wider web already discusses. In an Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands, web mentions correlated 0.664 with AI Overview visibility. Backlinks correlated 0.218.
  • Problem-led prompts ("how do I fix…") tend to be answered with sources, not brand names. "Who makes…" and "best…" prompts name brands. Plan content for each.
  • AI brand lists almost never repeat. Track how often you're named across many runs, not your position in one answer.

What does it mean to be mentioned in ChatGPT? Mention vs citation

A mention is when ChatGPT names your brand in the text of its answer. A citation is when your website appears among the sources it links. The two are different wins. You can be cited without being named, and named without being cited, so measure them separately before deciding what to fix.

Mention
Your brand name appears in the answer text, for example in a list of suppliers or as a recommendation.
Citation
A page on your domain is linked as a source for the answer.
Retrieval
ChatGPT's search read your page while building the answer but didn't link it. You can't see this directly in the chat, but it is why a page can shape an answer without getting credit.

For a buyer comparing suppliers, the mention matters most, because that is the shortlist they read. For a buyer trying to understand a problem, the citation is often the only visible win available, because the answer may not name any brand at all.

Why doesn't ChatGPT mention my brand?

Usually because the web doesn't connect your brand to the question strongly enough. ChatGPT can only name brands it finds in training data or in the pages its search reads. If few independent sites mention you for that topic, your facts are inconsistent, or your site blocks OpenAI's search crawler, another brand gets the slot.

The strongest public evidence comes from Ahrefs' study of 75,000 brands (May 2025). Branded web mentions had the highest correlation with brand visibility in Google AI Overviews, at 0.664, against 0.218 for backlinks. About 26% of brands had no AI Overview mentions at all. Brands in the top quartile for web mentions averaged 169 AI Overview mentions, while the next quartile down averaged 14.

Two caveats. This is correlation, not proof that mentions cause visibility, and it measured Google AI Overviews, not ChatGPT. But it points the same way as what you see when you test ChatGPT: the brands that are widely discussed get named more often.

Reason you're not namedWhat to fix first
Few third-party sites mention you for this topicGet listed and reviewed where the category is discussed: retailers, directories, trade media, "key players" lists, YouTube, community threads
Your brand facts differ across the webUse one description, one category and one set of key facts on your site, profiles and listings
Your name is shared with another companyPair the name with your category everywhere ("Acme coffee roasters") and check how AI describes you
OAI-SearchBot is blockedAllow it in robots.txt and check firewall or CDN bot rules
You only have broad category pagesBuild pages for specific capabilities, products and use cases you're genuinely strong at
Your pages make claims without proofAdd specs, figures, named sources and quotes that a model can lift
You're aiming at prompts that name no brandsAim for citations on those prompts, and mentions on "who makes" and "best" prompts

How to check if ChatGPT mentions your brand

Write 20 to 50 questions your buyers actually ask, without your brand name in them. Run each in a temporary chat with search on, at least three times, from your buyers' country. Record whether you're named, whether your site is cited, and which other brands and sites appear. One run proves nothing.

Use this template for the questions. Swap in your details and keep the wording close to how buyers type.

Discovery: How do I [fix / choose / understand] [problem] for [use case]?
Consideration: Who makes [product or service] for [use case] in [country]?
What are the best [category] brands for [buyer type]?
Comparison: [Your brand] vs [competitor]: which is better for [use case]?
Entity check: What is [your brand]? What does [your brand] sell?

Run the entity check first. If ChatGPT confuses you with another company, or describes you wrong, fix that before anything else, and add your category to the brand name in later prompts ("[brand] packaging manufacturer") so the results aren't mixed up.

To find the questions in the first place, see our guide on how to find the questions customers ask AI.

Which prompts can you actually win?

It depends on the intent behind the prompt. Problem-led prompts ("how do I fix…") are often answered with an explanation and sources, with no brand named. Consideration prompts ("who makes…", "best…") and comparison prompts name brands. So you win the first kind by being cited and the second kind by being named.

Prompt typeExampleWhat winning looks likeContent that earns it
Discovery (problem)How do I stop my coffee beans going stale so fast?Your page is cited as a sourceProblem-to-fix guides, explainers with data
ConsiderationWhich specialty coffee roasters in Jakarta sell online?Your brand is named in the listCapability pages, third-party listings and reviews
ComparisonBrand A vs Brand B for home espressoYou're named and described accuratelyHonest comparison pages, spec tables, reviews

Treat this split as a hypothesis to test in your own category, not a rule. When you run your question set, tag each prompt by intent and count how many answers name any brand at all. If a whole cluster of prompts names nobody, chasing a mention there wastes effort. Aim to be the cited source instead.

Start where you are distinctive. A narrow prompt that matches something you're genuinely known for ("single-origin beans roasted for home espresso") is far easier to win than a broad category prompt ("best coffee brands"), where the biggest brands already fill the list.

7 steps to get your brand mentioned in ChatGPT

Fix the basics that stop ChatGPT from finding and trusting you, then build pages and third-party mentions for the prompts you can win, then re-test on a schedule. Most brands should work through these steps in order, because the first two are quick and block everything after them.

  1. Make your brand facts consistent everywhere. Use the same name, one-line description, category, location and key facts on your website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, marketplace stores and directory listings. Add Organization schema to your site. Inconsistent facts make it harder for a model to be sure who you are.
  2. Allow OAI-SearchBot and check your firewall. OpenAI's crawler documentation says "sites that are opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers". GPTBot, the training crawler, is a separate setting, so you can block training and still allow search. OpenAI says robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to apply. Also check your CDN or WAF bot rules, which can block crawlers even when robots.txt allows them.
  3. Build specific capability pages before broad category pages. One page per product, service or use case you're genuinely good at, with who it's for, specs, prices or price ranges, and proof. These match the narrow consideration prompts you can win first.
  4. Write problem-to-fix guides to earn citations. For the problems your product solves, publish the clearest explanation on the web: cause, fix, when to call a supplier. These pages win the discovery prompts where no brand is named.
  5. Add spec tables, statistics and named sources to key pages. In the GEO study by Aggarwal et al. (KDD 2024), adding citations, quotations and statistics raised a source's visibility in generative answers by up to 40%, while keyword stuffing gave little or no improvement. Lower-ranked sources gained the most, and results varied by domain. Treat 40% as an experimental ceiling, not a promise.
  6. Get listed where each engine looks. Retailer and marketplace listings, B2B directories, trade media, "key players" roundups, YouTube videos and community threads. These are the third-party mentions that the Ahrefs data links to visibility. Our post on whether social media affects AI search visibility covers the social side.
  7. Re-test monthly and track mention rate, not rank. Run the same question set, on the same engines, from the same country. See the measurement section below.

Do ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews use the same sources?

No. They retrieve from different indexes and weight sources differently, so the same question can produce different brands and different citations on each engine. Don't optimise for "AI" as one thing. Run your question set on each engine your buyers use and look at which sites each one cites.

ChatGPT search relies on OpenAI's own crawler, OAI-SearchBot, so being crawlable by it is the first requirement for ChatGPT specifically. Gemini and Google AI Overviews draw on Google's index, which is why classic SEO still matters for them. The Ahrefs correlation above was measured on AI Overviews. Assume it carries over to ChatGPT only until your own tests show otherwise.

The practical consequence: when you list the sites each engine cites for your questions, you get a separate to-do list for each one. If ChatGPT keeps citing an industry body and AI Overviews keep citing marketplaces, those are two different jobs.

How long does it take, and how do you measure it?

Technical fixes such as unblocking OAI-SearchBot can apply within about a day. Brand mentions usually take months, because they depend on third-party sites covering you. Measure progress as your mention rate across repeated runs of a fixed question set, re-tested monthly or at 90 days, never as a single screenshot.

The reason is variance. In a SparkToro study run with Gumshoe (January 2026), about 600 volunteers ran 12 prompts through ChatGPT, Claude and Google's AI roughly 2,961 times. There was less than a 1-in-100 chance that ChatGPT or Google's AI returned the same list of brands twice. How often a brand appeared was far more stable than its position. It is not a peer-reviewed study, but the conclusion matches what anyone who tests repeatedly sees. Search Engine Land covered it here.

A simple method you can run yourself:

  1. Fix the question set. 20 to 50 questions per market, tagged by intent (discovery, consideration, comparison).
  2. Fix the setup. Temporary chat with search on, same engines, and log the date and model.
  3. Test from your buyers' country. ChatGPT localises answers to where you are. Testing from Jakarta for a buyer in Singapore gives you the wrong shortlist.
  4. Run each question at least three times. Report rates, not one-off hits. Our guide on how many prompts to track explains how large a set you need for a stable number.
  5. Record four things per answer: whether you're named, whether your site is cited, every other brand named, and every domain cited.
  6. Check accuracy. When you are named, note whether the description is correct and positive.

Then report three numbers: mention rate (answers naming you ÷ all answers), citation share (your domain's citation slots ÷ all citation slots) and visibility (answers with a mention or a citation). Split each by intent. Also compare the brands AI actually names with the competitors you think you have. The gap is often the most useful finding.

Running this by hand works for a first check. To track it every month, Data AI Search by Intura runs your buyers' questions in Bahasa Indonesia and English on ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and DeepSeek, and shows which brands and sources each engine names. Start with a free AI visibility audit. We build it, so weigh the recommendation accordingly; the method above works without it.

Pertanyaan yang sering diajukan

Can you rank in ChatGPT?

Not in the way you rank in Google. ChatGPT rarely returns the same list of brands twice: a SparkToro study found less than a 1-in-100 chance of an identical list. What you can improve and measure is how often you're named across many runs of the same questions, which is far more stable than position.

Why isn't my brand showing up in ChatGPT?

Usually because few independent sites connect your brand to the question, your brand facts are inconsistent, your name is shared with another company, or your site blocks OAI-SearchBot. Check the entity first by asking ChatGPT what your brand is, then check robots.txt and your firewall rules.

How do I get my business recommended by ChatGPT?

Make your brand facts consistent, allow OAI-SearchBot, build pages for the specific products or capabilities you are strongest at, and get listed and reviewed on the third-party sites that answers in your category cite. Start with narrow prompts where you are genuinely distinctive.

What is the difference between a ChatGPT brand mention and a citation?

A mention is your brand name in the answer text. A citation is your website linked as a source. Problem-led questions are often answered with citations and no brand names, while "who makes" and "best" questions name brands, so plan different content for each.

Does blocking GPTBot stop ChatGPT from mentioning my brand?

Not on its own. OpenAI treats GPTBot (training) and OAI-SearchBot (search) as separate settings. OpenAI's documentation says sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, so keep OAI-SearchBot allowed if you want to appear there.

How long does it take to get mentioned in ChatGPT?

Technical fixes such as allowing OAI-SearchBot take effect in about 24 hours. Mentions depend on third-party coverage, so expect months. Re-run a fixed question set monthly, or at 90 days, from the same country, and compare mention rates.
