The core

Summary

What we priced

A one-person company in Indonesia can run its AI layer for anywhere from about Rp75,000 to about Rp10 million a month. The spread comes from three decisions, not from how hard you work: which model tier you call, whether you pay by subscription or by token, and how many customer messages you send over WhatsApp. This study is about businesses that never had employees, the solo founder, freelancer or PT Perorangan owner who pays for AI out of their own margin. It is not about replacing staff.

Our verdict

For most solo businesses the AI model is the smallest line on the bill. Message volume decides a service business's total, model tier decides a software builder's, and the choice between three similarly priced chat plans barely moves either. Start with one subscription, put automation on the cheapest model that passes your own test, and count WhatsApp messages before you count tokens.

The Price List, 1 November 2026

The three big chat subscriptions now cost almost the same in rupiah, so the subscription choice is about features and limits, not price. The API is where the spread is: the same call costs 20 times more on a mid-tier model than on a budget one, and 100 times more on a flagship.

Tax and currency

Foreign digital services that the tax office (DJP) appoints as PPN PMSE collectors charge 12% on a base of 11/12 of the price, an effective 11%; 264 had been appointed by the end of April 2026. The list changes: OpenAI was appointed from 3 November 2025 and removed again in April 2026, so check your own invoice for a tax line rather than assuming one. Dollar-priced bills also move with the rupiah, from Rp16,782 per dollar on 26 January 2026 to Rp18,074 on 23 October 2026: a 7.7% rise with no change in usage.

Illustrative

Three One-Person Stacks, Priced

Three illustrative one-person stacks show how the arithmetic works. They use the list prices above, Rp18,000 per dollar and 11% PPN where it applies, with token volumes chosen to illustrate, not measured from a real business. Non-AI tools such as design apps and hosting are left out.

Stack A: the content solo

Creator, freelance marketer or brand owner writing captions, scripts and research

LevelWhat you pay forPer month, list price
LightOne entry plan: ChatGPT Go or Google AI PlusRp75,000
StandardOne Pro-tier plan: Google AI Pro, ChatGPT Plus or Claude ProRp309,000–349,000
HeavyAll three Pro-tier plans, one for each model's strengthRp1,007,000
Add up to 11% where PPN is charged on top: Rp1,117,770 for the heavy level.

What it means

The content solo has no token bill, only a limits problem. A Pro plan is a usage cap, not unlimited use, and the heavy level exists because people hit that cap and buy a second plan rather than wait.

Stack B: the service solo

Online shop or consultancy answering 3,000 customer messages a month on WhatsApp with an AI reply bot

Total with 11% PPNRp1,573,758Rp1,858,473
Budget model: Claude Haiku 5.5 or GPT-6 Luna. Mid model: Claude Sonnet 5.5 or GPT-6 Sol.

What it means

For a service solo the AI model is the smallest line on the bill. Meta's message fee is more than 50 times the budget model's token cost, and moving to a mid-tier model adds Rp256,500 a month for the same 3,000 replies. The message count matters first, then the model, and only then the subscription.

Stack C: the builder solo

Non-technical founder shipping a software product with AI: 20M input and 4M output tokens of product traffic a month

LevelCoding planProduct APIBefore PPNWith 11% PPN
LeanClaude Pro, $20 (web)Budget tier: Rp72,000Rp432,000Rp479,520
MidClaude Pro, $20 (web)Mid tier: Rp1,440,000Rp1,800,000Rp1,998,000
HeavyClaude Max, $100 (web)Flagship ($10 / $50): Rp7,200,000Rp9,000,000Rp9,990,000

What it means

The builder is the only one of the three whose bill scales with customers: the same 24M tokens cost Rp72,000 on a budget model and Rp7.2 million on a flagship. Sending the easy calls to a budget model and only the hard ones to a flagship is the largest saving available to a one-person software business. The switch itself is a configuration change; building the test set that tells easy from hard takes a builder days, plus ongoing review.

Beyond the list price

The Hidden Costs

The list price is the smallest surprise on a one-person AI bill. Five costs sit outside it.

1.

PPN, where it is collected

An appointed foreign platform adds an effective 11%: a $100 API month becomes $111 before the exchange rate is applied. Because the collector list changes, read the invoice, not the price page.

2.

The exchange rate

Dollar-priced bills rose 7.7% between January and October 2026 with no change in usage. Rupiah-priced plans, including App Store prices, shield you from this; API spend does not.

3.

Usage limits

When a plan's cap hits mid-task, you can wait, buy a second plan (Stack A's heavy level) or move the work to the API. Each option costs money or time, and none is on the price page.

4.

Message fees that grow with success

WhatsApp bills service replies per message after the free 1,000. A shop that doubles its customers roughly doubles its Meta bill, and Stack B shows that bill is already the largest line.

5.

Shared accounts

Resellers sell shared ChatGPT access from Rp35,000 a month by splitting one account among several buyers. The saving is real, and so is the cost: your chats, files and customer data sit in an account you do not control, sharing breaks the providers' terms, and a suspended account leaves you no recourse. We price the official route only, and we would not put customer data through a shared account.

The cost with no price tag

One cost has no rupiah figure because it is yours: time. In a one-person company the founder is the only person who notices when the bot replies wrongly, an automation stops, or an API key hits its spend limit at 2 a.m. Budget review time the way you budget tokens.

06

The break-even

Subscription or API: Where the Break-Even Sits

A Rp349,000 Pro-tier subscription breaks even with mid-tier API use at about 5 million input tokens a month, and never against a budget model. Which one to pay for depends on whether a person or a program is doing the typing. The table assumes output is 20% of input.

Monthly usageMid-tier API ($2 / $10)Budget API ($0.10 / $0.50)Pro-tier plan
1M in + 0.2M outRp72,000Rp3,600Rp349,000
3M in + 0.6M outRp216,000Rp10,800Rp349,000
5M in + 1M outRp360,000Rp18,000Rp349,000
10M in + 2M outRp720,000Rp36,000Rp349,000, if the cap allows

The subscription also buys what the API does not: an interface, file upload, memory, research modes and no code to maintain. The API wins in three situations: when a program makes the calls (a reply bot, a product feature), because subscriptions cannot be called from code; when the work is repetitive enough for a budget model, because 3M tokens there cost about 3% of a subscription; and when you keep hitting a plan's cap, because tokens have no cap, only a bill. Most one-person companies end up with one subscription for the founder and one API key, on a budget model, for everything automated.

Prices move

Compare the two bills every quarter, because prices in this market move often: OpenAI launched GPT-6 Sol and Luna on 22 September 2026, Meta's new WhatsApp rate card took effect on 1 October 2026, and Google's own price page already lists Gemini 4 Argon doubling in price from 1 December 2026.

Compare, choose, save

What to Do: Five Decisions

A one-person company controls its AI bill with five decisions. All five can be decided in an afternoon; the side-by-side model test in step 2 takes about a week of real inputs.

1

Start with one subscription, in rupiah

Pick the Pro-tier plan whose strengths match your main work and pay in rupiah, so the exchange rate is not your problem. Add a second plan only after hitting the cap three months in a row.

2

Put automation on the cheapest model that passes your test

Run the same prompts on a budget, mid and flagship model with your real inputs and compare the answers side by side. Many reply, summary and classification tasks pass on the budget tier at 5% of the mid-tier price; check yours before you assume it.

3

Count messages before tokens

If you sell on WhatsApp, forecast the monthly message count first. Since the October 2026 rate card that number sets your bill more than the model does.

4

Cap every API key

Set a monthly spend limit on every key, around 150% of last month's bill, so a bug or a traffic spike cannot become a surprise invoice.

5

Re-price every quarter

Keep a one-row-per-tool sheet with price, date checked and source. It is how you notice when a cheaper model or a new rate card changes the maths.

08

Transparency

Method, Caveats and Sources

This is a desk study of published prices as of 1 November 2026, not a survey of what Indonesian one-person companies actually spend. That measurement is the natural follow-up and would turn the illustrative stacks into observed ones.

  • API prices were read from Anthropic's, OpenAI's and Google's own pricing pages on 1 November 2026 (standard tier, short prompts).
  • Subscription prices are rupiah list prices reported by IDN Times on 30 October 2026, with Claude's dollar prices from claude.com and its App Store price from SSD Nodes. App Store and web prices can differ.
  • WhatsApp fees are Meta's Indonesia rate card effective 1 October 2026 as reported by Antara and published by a BSP; marketing rates differ between BSPs.
  • Rupiah conversions use Rp18,000 per dollar, rounded from Rp18,074 on 23 October 2026. The rate on your billing date applies.
  • Token volumes in the stacks are chosen to illustrate the arithmetic. Real usage varies with prompt length, language and model behaviour.

Known gaps

  1. 1.ChatGPT Pro is left out: sources give two different rupiah prices.
  2. 2.Whether PPN is charged on top of a rupiah list price varies by vendor and payment channel; the stacks show both totals where it matters.
  3. 3.The founder's time is described, not priced.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does the AI layer of a one-person company cost per month in Indonesia?
From about Rp75,000 to about Rp10 million a month at list prices checked on 1 November 2026. A content solo on one entry plan pays Rp75,000; one Pro-tier plan costs Rp309,000–349,000; a WhatsApp shop sending 3,000 messages a month with a reply bot pays about Rp1.6–1.9 million with PPN; a software builder on a flagship model passes Rp9 million. Model tier and message volume drive the spread, not the subscription.
Is a one-person company the same as a PT Perorangan?
No. A one-person company, in the 2026 sense, is a business run by one founder using AI tools instead of staff. PT Perorangan (Perseroan Perorangan) is Indonesia's legal entity for a single owner, registered online for an official fee of Rp50,000. You can be one without the other.
Is an AI subscription taxed in Indonesia?
When the vendor is an appointed PPN PMSE collector, yes: 12% on a base of 11/12 of the price, an effective 11%. DJP had appointed 264 collectors by the end of April 2026, but the list changes; OpenAI was appointed from 3 November 2025 and removed in April 2026. App Store prices already include tax, so check your invoice for a tax line.
Subscription or API, which is cheaper?
For a person chatting by hand, the subscription: a Rp349,000 Pro-tier plan only breaks even with mid-tier API use at about 5 million input tokens a month. For anything automated, the API on a budget model: 3 million input tokens plus 600,000 output tokens cost about Rp10,800, roughly 3% of a subscription. Most one-person companies run one subscription for the founder and one API key for automation.
What does a WhatsApp Business message cost in Indonesia from October 2026?
Rp356.65 per service message before PPN, after the first 1,000 free service messages per number each month, on Meta's Indonesia rate card effective 1 October 2026. One BSP lists marketing messages at Rp586.33. BSPs may add a platform fee on top, for example $19 a month.
Which AI model is cheapest for customer replies?
The budget tier: Claude Haiku 5.5 (for prompts up to 100K tokens) and GPT-6 Luna list at $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.50 per million output tokens, and Gemini 2.5 Flash-Lite at $0.10 and $0.40. For 3,000 replies a month that is about Rp13,500; the same replies on Claude Sonnet 5.5 or GPT-6 Sol cost about Rp270,000. Test your own prompts side by side before choosing.
Is a shared (patungan) ChatGPT or Claude account safe for a business?
It is cheap, from Rp35,000 a month, and risky: your chats, files and customer data sit in an account you do not control, sharing breaks the providers' terms, and a suspended account leaves you no recourse. We do not recommend it for anything involving customer data.
