AI Search vs Paid Ads by Category: Full Review 2026 for Business Owners
Should you pay for clicks or get your brand named by ChatGPT and Gemini? A 9-category review with costs, data and a 90-day plan for business owners.

AI tools now build your buyer's shortlist before anyone clicks an ad. For categories where buyers research a lot and clicks are expensive, such as finance, B2B software, electronics and education, getting named by AI is the better long-term spend. For promos, launches and everyday products, ads still pay faster. This review gives you the numbers per category, a budget split to test and a 90-day plan.
If you run a business, you have probably asked your marketing team one question this year: should we keep spending on Google Ads, or put money into showing up in ChatGPT and Gemini? Most answers you get are either hype or dismissal. Neither helps you set a budget.
This review looks at the decision the way an owner has to: what each option costs, what it gets you, and how long it keeps working. It covers nine popular categories with four numbers each: how many buyers use AI, what a click costs, which sources AI trusts, and a verdict.
Most of the large studies cited here survey US buyers, and the click prices are US benchmarks. Indonesian data is marked where it exists. Use the numbers to decide what to test in your own market, and the 90-day plan at the end to test it.
The short answer for owners
You need both, but in different proportions depending on what you sell. Here is the summary. The rest of the article explains each line.
- Optimize for AI first: finance and insurance, B2B software, consumer electronics, education. Buyers research for days or weeks and clicks cost the most.
- Do both: travel, skincare and beauty, healthcare, property. AI shapes the shortlist, but promos, bookings and local searches still need ads.
- Ads first: food, beverage and grocery. People buy out of habit or because of a promo, and AI has little to influence.
Why this decision matters now: AI picks the shortlist
Your buyers changed where they start. L.E.K. Consulting surveyed 2,650 US shoppers who use AI. In April 2026, 46% started their purchase research on an AI tool such as ChatGPT or Gemini. Only 24% started on a search engine. Two years earlier the numbers were nearly reversed: 43% on search, 25% on AI.
Indonesian buyers behave the same way. A Visa and YouGov study reported by Katadata found 82% of Indonesian consumers use AI to help with shopping searches. Google reports that 84% of Gemini prompts in Indonesia are written in Bahasa Indonesia, so your buyers are asking in their own words and their own language.
Here is why that matters to your revenue. A search results page shows ten links and several ads, so every competitor gets a chance. An AI answer names two to five brands. If you are not one of them, the buyer may never type your name into Google at all. You lose the sale before your ad has a chance to run.
If GEO and AI search are new terms for you, start with our explainer, What is GEO and how is it different from SEO.
Rented traffic vs owned visibility: what you pay for
A paid click is rented. You pay for every visit, and the visits stop the day your budget stops. Click prices also keep rising. The average Google Search CPC reached $2.96 in Q1 2026, up 12% from $2.64 a year earlier, according to Digital Applied.
A page that AI engines and review sites cite works differently. You pay once to make it good, then it keeps getting named and visited for months. It needs updates, but it doesn't bill you per visitor.
Here is a simple break-even example with illustrative numbers. Say a strong comparison page costs you Rp5 juta to write, research and publish. It brings 300 visits a month that would otherwise cost Rp3.000 each as ad clicks. That is Rp900.000 of ad spend replaced every month, so the page pays back in about six months and everything after that is saved. Replace these numbers with your own Keyword Planner prices and content costs.

Two warnings before you move budget
First, AI sends few clicks. L.E.K. found AI referrals were still under 0.5% of total site traffic across more than 100 brands, even though that traffic grew 176% a year. If you judge AI search only by visits in Google Analytics, it will look like it isn't working. Track how often AI names your brand instead. Our guide on how to measure GEO performance explains what to measure.
Second, buyers still check before they pay. Idea Grove found only 2% of US consumers would buy from an AI-recommended brand they had never heard of without checking first, and 45% would Google the brand straight away. Feedvisor found only 5% buy immediately after an AI recommendation. So when a buyer searches your name, your Google results, reviews and marketplace listing must back up what AI said. A brand ad on your own name protects that moment.
How to read the category scorecards
AI use is the share of AI-using shoppers who used AI in that category, from L.E.K.'s US survey. Average CPC is the US Google Search benchmark from WordStream's 2026 data, reported by SearchLab. AI cites shows the source types studies found AI engines quote most. Indonesian CPCs are usually lower than US prices, so check your own terms in Google Keyword Planner with the location set to Indonesia.
Scorecard: Travel
- AI use: 71%, the highest of any category tracked
- Average CPC (US): $1.05
- AI cites: Travel trade press, booking platforms, reviews and video
- Verdict: Do both
Travel buyers ask AI to plan routes, compare hotels and explain visa rules. Our Passport Generation study found visa and passport questions made up 27% of Indonesian travel questions, yet they appeared in at most 2.7% of AI answers. A travel agent or insurer with a clear page on Japan visa rules for Indonesian citizens has a real opening.
Clicks are cheap at about $1, so keep ads on ready-to-book searches with dates. Put content money into the planning questions buyers ask weeks earlier.
What to tell your team: build pages for the top 10 visa, cost and itinerary questions, and keep ads on dated booking terms.
Scorecard: Consumer electronics
- AI use: 65%
- Average CPC (US): $1.30 (retail benchmark)
- AI cites: A small set of review sites, video reviews and community threads
- Verdict: Optimize first
Electronics buyers compare specs and prices, the task AI handles best. Adobe data shows AI referrals in electronics convert better than in most retail categories. Search Engine Land found electronics among the most concentrated categories for AI citations: AI relies on a few trusted review sources.
That means your visibility depends on whether those reviewers cover you. Our guide to GEO for electronics and gadget brands in Indonesia shows how to approach it.
What to tell your team: get products reviewed by the sites and YouTube channels AI cites, publish full spec and comparison pages, and save ads for launches, 11.11 and Harbolnas.
Scorecard: Finance and insurance
- AI use: 62% use AI to research, but only 24% prefer AI guidance for financial services
- Average CPC (US): $4.25 (financial services), $5.25 (insurance)
- AI cites: Comparison and affiliate sites, plus official sources
- Verdict: Optimize first, keep brand ads
Buyers research loans, cards and insurance with AI, but Contentsquare found fewer trust it for the final call. They will check every detail on Google and official sites.
This is where ad costs hurt most. At the US insurance benchmark, 500 clicks a month costs $2,625, or $31,500 a year. If CPC rises 12% again, the same clicks cost about $35,280 next year. A page that comparison sites and AI quote keeps working without that bill.
Studies by Goodie found comparison sites such as NerdWallet appear in over 5% of AI answers in US finance. In Indonesia, find which comparison sites AI names for your product, then make sure your data there is correct.
What to tell your team: fix product data on comparison sites, publish plain answers on fees, eligibility and claims, and keep ads on the brand name and high-intent product terms.
Scorecard: Skincare and beauty
- AI use: About half (L.E.K. found no category below 47%)
- Average CPC (US): $1.30 (retail benchmark)
- AI cites: Reddit, community reviews and specialist beauty publications
- Verdict: Do both
Beauty buyers ask detailed questions about skin type, ingredients and price. 5W and Goodie both found Reddit and specialist publications among the top sources AI uses for beauty. L.E.K. also found visit time on beauty sites fell 16% in two years, a sign that buyers arrive with their choice mostly made.
Community talk feeds AI answers, so your social presence counts. We covered this in does social media affect AI search visibility. For marketplace sales, track results with TikTok Shop analytics.
What to tell your team: publish ingredient and skin-type guides, get the product into real community reviews, and keep ads for launches, bundles and payday promos.
Scorecard: F&B and grocery
- AI use: About half
- Average CPC (US): $1.30 (retail benchmark)
- AI cites: Widely spread, no dominant source
- Verdict: Ads first
Grocery is bought often and with little thought. Adobe found AI referrals convert worse in grocery than in electronics, and Search Engine Land found food and beverage citations spread across many sources. Winning AI mentions here is hard and pays less per answer.
Put most of the budget into search ads, marketplace ads and promos, and measure them with tools like Shopee analytics.
What to tell your team: keep store details, menus, prices and delivery areas correct on the website and Google Business Profile. That is enough for AI questions such as where to buy nearby.
Scorecard: B2B SaaS
- AI use: Not in the consumer surveys
- Average CPC (US): $3.50
- AI cites: G2, Capterra, Reddit, LinkedIn, YouTube. Only 10.15% of citations go to brand-owned sites.
- Verdict: Optimize first
B2B buyers ask AI to compare tools for their team size and use case. Foundation found nearly 90% of AI citations for B2B SaaS come from sites the brand doesn't own. Your blog matters less than your reviews, community threads and LinkedIn presence.
Long sales cycles and $3.50 clicks make each ad-driven lead expensive. Our guide on finding good backlinks for AI search shows which third-party sites to target.
What to tell your team: ask happy customers for G2 or Capterra reviews, publish honest comparison and alternatives pages, and keep ads on your brand and competitor names.
Scorecard: Healthcare
- AI use: About half, but only 16% feel comfortable using AI for health products
- Average CPC (US): $2.85
- AI cites: Government, university and medical institution sites
- Verdict: Do both, carefully
Patients ask AI about symptoms, costs and procedures, but Clutch found trust is low. AI leans on official and medical sources, so a clinic page with no named doctor will struggle.
What to tell your team: have a named doctor write or review content, publish prices and preparation steps, and run local ads for booking terms such as "dermatologist near me".
Scorecard: Education
- AI use: About half
- Average CPC (US): Not in the benchmark set used here. Check locally.
- AI cites: .edu domains and course platforms
- Verdict: Optimize first, ads at enrollment
Choosing a course takes weeks, and Topify found AI cites university sites and course platforms most. If your fees and outcomes live only in a PDF brochure, AI can't quote them.
What to tell your team: publish fees, duration, curriculum and graduate outcomes as text on the page, list the program on major course platforms, and run ads around enrollment deadlines.
Scorecard: Property
- AI use: Not tracked in the surveys reviewed
- Average CPC (US): $2.30
- AI cites: No reliable study found
- Verdict: Do both, test first
Property is a large, slow decision that fits the AI research pattern, but there is no solid study on how buyers use AI for it. Be careful with anyone selling certainty.
What to tell your team: ask ChatGPT and Gemini 20 buyer questions in Bahasa Indonesia, such as "apartemen dekat MRT di bawah Rp1 miliar", and record which developers and portals they name. Keep ads for launches and open houses.
When ads still pay faster
AI is slow to learn new things. In our Gemini study of 1,250 Indonesian prompts, only 34.2% of answers triggered a Google Search. The rest came from what the model already knew. Use ads when speed matters:
- Product launches, because AI doesn't know your new product yet.
- Promos with a deadline, such as flash sales, payday deals, 11.11 and Ramadan campaigns.
- Everyday purchases where buyers don't research.
- Your own brand name, so competitors can't take the click when buyers check an AI recommendation.
- Testing which offers sell, since ads give results in days and content takes months.
A budget split to start testing
These splits are a starting point we suggest, not survey data. Adjust them after your first 90 days of results. "AI search work" covers content, reviews, PR and tracking.
| Verdict | AI search work | Paid ads | Categories |
|---|---|---|---|
| Optimize first | 60% | 40% | Finance, B2B SaaS, electronics, education |
| Do both | 40% | 60% | Travel, beauty, healthcare, property |
| Ads first | 15% | 85% | F&B and grocery |
Your 90-day plan
Here is a plan you can hand to your team or agency.
- Weeks 1 to 2: write 30 to 50 questions your buyers ask in Bahasa Indonesia. Run each in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity several times. Our post on how many prompts to track explains why one run isn't enough. Record which brands and sites appear.
- Weeks 1 to 2: pull Indonesian CPCs for your top 20 keywords from Keyword Planner. Mark questions where competitors are named and clicks are expensive. Those are your first targets.
- Weeks 3 to 8: build or fix five pages that answer those questions with prices, specs and comparisons. Follow our guide on how to get articles cited by ChatGPT. Work on getting reviewed on two of the third-party sites AI cites.
- Weeks 3 to 12: keep ads on your brand name, launches and promos. Cut generic research-stage keywords where AI now answers the question.
- Week 12: rerun the same questions. Compare how often you are named, and check AI referral traffic and branded search growth in your analytics.

Frequently asked questions
Is AI search optimization worth it for a small business?
Yes if your buyers research before they buy and your clicks are expensive. Start small: track 30 questions, fix five pages and get reviewed on two sites AI cites. If you sell low-cost everyday products, keep most of your budget in ads.
Should I stop Google Ads?
No. Buyers still check AI answers on Google, and AI is slow to learn about launches and promos. Shift budget gradually and keep ads on your brand name.
How long until AI search optimization shows results?
Plan for at least three months, often longer. AI engines often answer from existing knowledge and update slowly, so measure mention rate each month.
Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT or Gemini answers?
You can't buy a place in the regular answer the way you buy a search ad. You get named when the sources AI trusts, such as reviews, comparison sites, media and clear pages on your site, describe your brand well.
Does US data apply to Indonesia?
The habit does: 82% of Indonesian consumers use AI for shopping searches. Click prices and cited sources differ, so test in Bahasa Indonesia before you move budget.
